Significance Of Raksha Bandhan

Hindus have celebrated Rakhi for centuries. In 2023, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana will all observe Raksha Bandhan as a public holiday. The Rakhi holiday honors the relationship between brothers and sisters, as mentioned in the first part.

Since the idea of duty and brotherly love is universal, the celebration is well known among many cultures in the nation. Brothers and sisters must come together with their families on the morning of the festival day. Rakhis (threads) are tied by sisters as a sign of protection.

Raksha Bandhan – A Monsoon Festival

The monsoon festival of Raksha Bandhan has a deeper significance. All of the squalor and complications of living are eliminated by the rainy season. The season brings prosperity and newfound optimism, enabling us to fully enjoy life. Because of this, the Shravan month is revered as a holy time to honor the untarnished bonds of sibling love and the arrival of fortune.

Rakhi Shubh Muharat

Rakhi 2023 will be celebrated on August 30th. It is observed on the full moon day, also known as Rakhi Purnima, in the Hindu month of Shravan.  The auspicious timing for tying the Rakhi, also known as the Rakhi Shubh Muhurat, will start at 10:58 AM on Wednesday, 30 August 2023, and end at 7:05 AM on Thursday, 31 August 2023.

Importance Of Raksha Bandhan For Farmers

The Shravani ceremony held on Rakhi Purnima has special significance for the farmer community in many regions of India. Rich rainfall is necessary for a better harvesting season. The monsoon season is ideal for getting enough water for farming needs. Because of its fertility, farmers in regions like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand love the soil. The same celebration will take place during the 2023 Rakhi holiday.

Importance of Raksha Bandhan for fishers

In terms of the nation’s fishing community, the Raksha Bandhan event is more significant. States like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Goa mark the festival of Rakhi through a variety of rituals. The fishing community is entirely dependent on the sea for its subsistence. The monsoon season has a good impact on fish and sea water. Therefore, the Nariyal Purnima celebration is an attempt to win God Varuna’s favor.

Rakhi Purnima – A Beginning of New Life

The monsoon rainy season also represents transition, which is necessary to make room for a fresh beginning. As a result, the Brahmin community celebrates Shravan Purnima as Upakaram in Orissa, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

Story behind Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan, commonly referred to as Rakhi or Rakri, is a happy event that Hindus everywhere observe to celebrate the love and responsibilities that bind brothers and sisters together. The significance of this festival, however, goes beyond romantic partnerships because it unites people from all sexes, faiths, and origins to honor all kinds of platonic love.

In Sanskrit, the phrase “Raksha Bandhan” means “the knot of protection.” The ceremonies connected with this holiday may differ depending on the locale, but they all entail tying a thread. A sister or sister-like person puts a brightly colored, occasionally ornate thread around her brother’s wrist as a representation of her prayers and wishes for his safety. The brother gives his sister a special gift in exchange.

Raksha Bandhan has historical roots that date back thousands of years. This celebration is mentioned in traditions about Alexander the Great that date back to 326 BCE. There are various accounts of Raksha Bandhan in Hindu literature as well:

One of these tales has Indra’s wife Sachi putting a thread around her husband’s wrist to protect him during a conflict with the powerful demon King Bali. According to this myth, holy threads may have been worn as amulets in ancient India to provide protection for warriors, not just for brothers and sisters.

After Vishnu defeats King Bali and unifies the three worlds, King Bali asks Vishnu to reside in his palace, according to a different account from the Bhagavat Puran and the Vishnu Puran. Goddess Lakshmi, Vishnu’s wife, objects to this arrangement and binds a Rakhi on King Bali, making him her blood relative. Lakshmi requests Vishnu’s return to his family, and King Bali fulfills her wish after being moved by the gesture.

In a different tale, Devi Manasa, Ganesh’s sister, pays him a visit on Raksha Bandhan and fastens a Rakhi around his wrist. This motivates Ganesh’s sons Shubh and Labh, who want to celebrate Raksha Bandhan but feel excluded because they don’t have a sister. Santoshi Maa is created after they convince Ganesh to give them a sister. Since then, the three siblings have shared a Raksha Bandhan celebration every year.

During Raksha Bandhan, the renowned for their close friendship Krishna and Draupadi share an important moment. Draupadi cuts a piece of her saree when Krishna hurts his finger in battle and uses it to bind the wound. Krishna is moved by her display of affection and vows to return the favor. Later on, Krishna keeps his word by saving Draupadi at a crucial juncture.

Additionally, before Krishna departs to take part in the great battle, Draupadi ties Rakhi to him in the epic Mahabharat. Similar to Kunti, the mother of the Pandavas, Abhimanyu receives a Rakhi before beginning his own struggle.

These tales demonstrate the profound links of love and protection that exist outside of biological relationships while displaying the rich cultural importance and many storylines linked with Raksha Bandhan.
